1. Newer shingles are more impact resistant then older shingles. The effects of the sun and weathering often result in shingles becoming more brittle, therefore more susceptible to damage.
2. Although standard asphalt shingles generally perform well under a variety of weather conditions, hailstones impacting an asphalt shingle can compromise the expected performance/life expectancy.
3. A roof with two or more layers of asphalt shingles exhibits a "sponge effect", resulting in the top layer being more susceptible to damage from impacting hailstones.
4. Synthetic roofing, cedar shake shingles, clay tile, metal roofing, and even concrete tiles are all susceptible to hail damage. (Some flat roofs also apply)
5. Your insurance carrier must pay to replace damaged items and materials with the same type and quality of materials that were present at the time of said damage.
6. If you have a metal roof, your insurance company may want to only
compensate you for the "aesthetic" damage, since your roof will still
perform the function it is intended to. Unless specifically stated in
your policy, you have the right to have your roof replaced, and should
since the aesthetics of a home will effect it's market value.
